Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada and raised in the U.S. She's been a media critic since 1995. Feminist Frequency was established by Sarkeesian. The site hosts videos with commentary that analyze the representations of women that are prevalent in the media and popular culture of today. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as blogger. Feminist Frequency explores how women are represented in popular culture. Dispelling stereotypes of women is her main focus. But, she also explores the issue of specific harassment of women on the internet and for other groups which have been left out. Holding a master's degree in social and political thought at York University Sarkeesian is also an extremely sought-after public speaker and she has delivered talks at the TEDxWomen XOXO festival as well as at The United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. Since her early years, Sarkeesian was fascinated by the issue of gender identity and feminist thought. As a student, in 2009 she started her Feminist Frequency Website. The site was created by a woman in her early 20s who wanted to create the series of videos on the internet to examine the gender roles in games. But, she was victimized by online harassment. However, the attacks did not hinder her. She was only able to strengthen her position as a feminist journalist. Numerous awards have been given to her as a way of acknowledging her contributions to the field she have made. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winner for her media criticism and is the creator of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit organization which studies the portrayals of women in popular culture and the narratives that surround them.
